Thanks for this great list of resources!
Temporary Autonomous Zone by Hakim Bey would be a nice alternative to Alinsky's book.
Calculated Chaos by Butler Shaffer is a superb and eye-opening read.

Read "The Dirty Dozen--How Twelve Supreme Court Cases Radically Expanded Government and Eroded Freedom" by Robert A. Levy and William Mellor.

It sure shows how we got into this mess!

Some of what I'd recommend are above - Fair Tax, Atlas Shrugged & The 5000 Year Leap.

I'd add to that The Republic by Plato; Free Lunch by David Cay; and Bad Money by Kevin Philips.

I'd also like to suggest, that in addition to reading - get involved at any level of government. Call you representatives, attend town hall meetings, run for office, etc. we need honest reputable moral people involved.

Surprised that *Atlas Shrugged* isn't on the list; it's a must-read! I'd also add Ayn Rand's nonfiction collection, *Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal*.

What a great reading list! At the risk of adding one too many to the outstanding library already amassed in the blog and comments, I would also recommend "The 5000 Year Leap" by W. Cleon Skousen. It details the 28 Principles of Freedom that lead to greater progress int eh last 200 years than in the previous 5000, and that must be defended by all who desire peace, prosperity, and justice.

SURELY this one goes on the list.

This book changed my life forEVER. I only read it about 4 or 5 years ago, but it has been amazing to watch the book actually happen right before my eyes.

I probably never would have noticed all the (bad) things going on with GOV and business if I had not read Atlas Shrugged.

Good add to the list and HIGHLY recommended.

Atlas Shrugged just keeps gaining mythical status. I read something recently where it entered the best sellers lists again. Timeless....and so many statists hate it without having read it.

"Why We Buy", by Paco Underhill. Nice job of explaining customer mentality, by explaining customer turnoffs to making a purchase and how to fix them. (Examples, women don't like to bend over to look at a product unless their is plenty of "butt room" so they won't get bumped from behind. Raise the product higher. Older people tend to have poorer eyesight, therefore make your price tags and important information on the product a minimum of 12 point font. Much more.)

Anything by Ayn Rand is worth reading. Also Harry Browne, HOW I FOUND FREEDOM IN AN UNFREE WORLD is maybe his best, but anything by him is good.
WHY SOB'S SUCCEED IN SMALL BUSINESS WHEN NICE GUYS DON'T is good, sorry I can't remember the author's name.

Thanks for the reading list! Barnes & Noble thanks you. My wallet does not (lol).

To add to the list: Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand is definitely my favorite book on capitalism, freedom, and individual rights.

Dan,
While I think some of Godin's books are a little gimmicky, The Dip definitely was full of wisdom. That was a solid book that I even got for a friend who was working through growing pains at his own start-up. I kept finding myself nodding with "aha!" moments all the way through.

Great recommendation and a fast read!

Doing a face-palm right now. How did we leave that one off the original list?! Great recommendation.

One other favorite from Drucker:

Thanks for the recommendation Joe. I need to learn more about the Fair Tax. I have seen a book on the shelves that wasn't as high on the fair tax, written by Hugh Hewitt, but I haven't read it (or even thumbed through it).

However, it only has three stars at Amazon.com. It looks like there's a healthy debate going on around the fair tax. Thanks for the resources.

I know it may not be for everyone, but I found "The Dip" by Seth Godin to be very motivating. It doesn't have anything in there that most business people don't already know, but it does put it all into a coherent thought and make you think. It helped me think through my business and what I really was doing with it.
